He Turned the Trauma of a Near Lynching into Art

Winfred Rembert, who carved and painted leather to create vivid scenes of Southern cotton fields and chain gangs and juke joints, died Wednesday inside the New Haven home where he carved his masterpieces. His life and work are examples of the redemptive power of art.
